Chicks Dig Games: Not Just a Statement, a Lifestyle Site

She got game

In another sign that the face of gamers is changing, a new gaming site — geared toward female gamers – has launched, according to PSFK.

Co-founder Sarah Schutz of ChicksDigGames calls the current world of gaming male-centered. Sites dedicated to gaming feature "Babes" sections and reviews always reference the hypothetical gamer as a "he."

Ultimately, Chicks Dig Games aims to redefine the woman gaming industry based on the notion of the "real" woman gamer.

The site includes a Survival Guide, penned by Schutz, that reports statistics on girl gaming, including the following:

  • 38 percent of gamers are comprised of women
  • The majority of female gamers are over 18
  • Simulation games appeal to women for their organization, decorating and shopping aspects

The Guide also ponders women's actual relationship to gaming versus their perceived media-created relationship.

"The question is, 'What came first? The girl or the advertising?' We may never know the answer to this question," Schutz writes.

"While many girls do play games like The Sims, it is not quite clear whether it is because this is the genre of choice, or because these games have just been marketed more heavily towards women."
