US Behind on In-Flight Mobile Use
As the national union of flight attendants urges Congress to ban in-flight phone calls, passengers on foreign airlines have routinely begun using mobile phones and other wireless devices mid-flight, The New York Times reports.

Swiss Postal Service Brings Mail to 'Net
Last month the Swiss postal service launched Swiss Post Box, a program that enables subscribers to receive scans of certain snail-mail messages via email.
Upon receiving the scans in their inbox, users can decide which they want to openyg, then read the full message online.

Study: File-Sharing May Benefit Industry Over Long-Term
File-sharing -- a process whereby users avail their files, including music, TV shows and movies, to other users for downloading -- is not necessarily tantamount to piracy, according to a recent study of P2P (peer-to-peer) users in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, the act of uploading copyrighted music and movies is against the law. Most unpaid downloads consist of officially licensed promotional content.

Website Rating System Hits Obama Administration's Table
Andy Burnham, the United Kingdom's minister of culture, says the country is contemplating the use of a rating system for websites.

Social Features Beef Up Bebo -- and AOL -- Value Add
This morning AOL launched a revamped version of social network Bebo, replete with social features that suggest relevant content and track the activities of "friends."

EU: Price Caps Pending on SMS, Mobile Web-Surfing
This week European Union telecommunications ministers will consider approving rate limits on cross-border SMS messaging and mobile 'net surfing.
The proposal, made by telecom commissioner Viviane Reding, calls for a retail charge cap of 11 euro cents ($0.14) for cross-border text messages -- which would lower charges across European borders by an average of 62% from the current average rate of 29 euro cents ($0.38). A similar decline is expected for data roaming charges.

NebuAd Faces Class Action Suit, Phorm's ISPs Drop Like Flies
This week a class action lawsuit was filed against behavioral targeting company NebuAd and 26 internet service providers (ISPs) that tested the service.
Those named in the suit include CenturyTel, WOW, CableOne, Embarq, Knology, and Bresnan Communications, as well as 20 unnamed ISP defendants, referred to as "John Does," that purportedly also worked with NebuAd.

UK's Online Shoppers Get Duty-Free Benefits
As of December 1st, shoppers living within the United Kingdom will not have to pay customs duty on items purchased for less than £105 (approximately EU123 or $155) from sites based outside the European Union. Previously, the duty-free limit for goods bought online was £18 (EU21 or $26.50).

BT Gives Phorm's Behavioral Ad Model Another Go
UK telecom BT is dipping its feelers back in the behavioral advertising market. The company has decided to re-test Phorm, whose technology enables participating websites to serve ads to users, based on web-surfing data provided by their ISPs. Revenue is split between the ISP, website publishers and Phorm.
