The head of Canada's Corus Entertainment is expected to argue cable channels should be able to compete against similar channels, but that US networks are still not welcome, reports The Globe & Mail.
Corus' John Cassaday said niche cable channels should have to compete to survive. Long-standing rules in Canada have protected existing niche programmers from others offering coverage of the same interest area. The rules were meant to allow the then-nascent industry to thrive, but most stations are doing fine now and Cassaday thinks competition is both welcome and necessary.
But Cassaday also believes Canada's cable market needs protection from the entry of US networks.
The regulatory meeting in which he lays out his case occurs in January.
