A new study by Leichtman Research Group finds that cable operators now serve 24.3 million subscribers of high-speed internet, commanding 57 percent of the market, while telcos' digital subscriber line (DSL) offerings capture 18.5 million subscribers, MediaWeek writes (via MediaBuyerPlanner). Last year, DSL signed up 5.2 million broadband subscribers, while cable increased its HSD subscriber base by 4.4 million. In 2004, cable's market share of the U.S. HSD market fell to 60 percent from 63 percent in 2003.
