ClickZ: California Anti-Spyware Bills Progress

Anti-spyware bills advanced in both the California Senate and Assembly, amended to remove no-go propositions, such as banning information collection by web software. The process is forming bills that would for the most part force companies to disclose installation and purpose and allow simple uninstalls. The Senate measure would open up civil cases, with victims of spyware able to sue for a statutory $1,000 plus legal fees. This would ensure enforcement, where relying on the California Attorney General would be dependent on available resources and the current political climate.
