CA Senator: Google Perpetrated 'DM Opportunity'

CNET: Legislator seeks to block Gmail

As promised, Bay Aria Democrat Liz Figueroa introduced state legislation that would create a very strict new California privacy law primarily for the purpose of making Google's Gmail service illegal. The service allows people to store all their email with Google so as to take advantage of its search capabilities, in return for allowing content-targeted ads to appear on the same screen, much like they do with search listings.

The incensed legislator damned the service as "a direct-marketing opportunity for Google," clearly the lowest of lows. Next, they'll want to start earning (filthy) profits by providing innovative services, unless of course they can be stopped before it's too late.
