Some time ago (on May 16th), fellow Up2Speeder Robert Loch wrote, "Blogging helps search results." It seems the concept is catching on, making it into the SEO press as well.
SEOToday published an article on the same topic entitled "Business Blogs to Help Search Rankings." Normally, once everyone starts adopting an SEO tactic, it stops working because the search engines take note and try to weed out the manipulators.
This may be the case with business blogs as well. However, the well-executed blog serves the reader first and is not developed strictly for the search spiders. That means to blog will requires significant work. Not everyone has the stamina or proclivity to blog.
Even if they want to blog, businesses may not be able to find people with blogs in them. Assigning the blogging task to someone can be a waste of time. They may not be able to blog well. As a result, good blogs will continue to be recognized be search engines as valuable content. It may prove a good thing that blogging well isn't so easy. It will keep out the riffraff.
