Broadcasters Attack Unused Airwave Auction in New Campaign

Their power ... in your hands

The National Association of Broadcasters has launched an ad campaign attacking proposals to sell unused airwave space for broadband internet delivery, reports The Associated Press.

The group is targeting lawmakers with the campaign, scheduled to run on TV and print outlets in Washington, DC. The ads warn that allowing broadband internet delivery over the airwaves could interfere with over-the-air programming.

Companies supporting the initiative include Google, Dell, Microsoft and others. They maintain the plan would allow for cheap, high-speed internet access in rural areas where such service is currently unavailable.

The technology submitted by the coalition looking for approval of the wireless plan has failed previous tests but new versions are still awaiting testing by the FCC.

In a related story, Apple is reportedly interested in bidding on a section of the available wireless spectrum. The move, while unconfirmed, could be used to provide service to the iPhone or new wireless-capable iPod.
