Internet Retailer: Broadband penetration crosses the 50% threshold in July, NetRatings reports
While Nielsen's NetRatings division reported that a majority of internet households now has broadband access, another study by Leichtman Research shows that this growth is slowing. Despite the crossing of the 50 percent mark, more dial-up connections are actually used than are broadband connections (many have both). 2005 is likely the year in which more broadband connections will be used. NetRatings said it expected continued strong growth, but Leichtman's figures shows the growth isn't quite what it used to be, which perhaps was inevitable once a majority of households have been reached.
The net effect for advertisers and web developers: slow connections will continue to be a big reality for a long time to come.
