Internet Retailer: Broadband connections exceed 65% in the most high-speed cities
Broadband penetration is approaching two thirds of households in the five most wired cities: San Diego, Phoenix, Detroit, New York and Sacramento. Nielsen/NetRatings reports that the figure stands at a bare majority, 51 percent, nationwide. The least wired cities remain Columbus, OH (32 percent) and banking capital Charlotte, NC (27 percent).
NetRatings counted about 125 million online users in the U.S., with 64 million of them using broadband. That represents about 43 percent growth over last year. Dial-up accounts aren't declining as quickly, shrinking only 14 percent to 61 million.
