Broadband is a Finite Resource, Comcast Suggests

Comcast has disconnected a handful of customers that it says are using broadband connections excessively, reports the San Mateo County Times.

Comcast says the move to cut the service of bandwidth hogs was made to ensure quality service to the 99.9 percent of customers who operate normally. To be deemed excessive, one would have to send hundreds of thousands of pictures monthly, tens of thousands of daily emails, or download the equivalent of four feature films or 1000 songs per day.

Comcast says despite suggestions that broadband usage is unlimited, the company retains the right to cancel those it feels are abusing the system. Verizon and other internet providers boast a similar policy for online services.

Physorg notes that a growing broadband crunch is something cable operators are aware of but seem unwilling to discuss at this point.

On a related note, the U.S. Department of Justice issued an opinion to lawmakers coming down against "net neutrality." The law enforcement agency believes telecom companies should be able to charge content providers premium prices to prioritize the delivery of their content.
