Borders announced it would stop using Amazon as its e-commerce site in 2008.
The company plans to develop and launch its own e-commerce arm early next year.
In addition to the new site, Borders plans to install more interactive and web-enabled computer stations, or "digital media centers," in its 1,200+ stores, Internet Retailer reports. The bookseller also plans to make greater use of social networking tools.
After December, Borders will cease use of Amazon.com for e-commerce, a partnership that goes back to 2001. It will instead build a new internal e-commerce engine via IBM WebSphere that consolidates all its websites, including Borders.com and Waldenbooks.com, onto a single platform.
It will use a yet-to-be-named third-party provider for fulfillment.
