Bloglines Pushes Ads on Search Results, Start Page

RSS feed reader Bloglines announced its redesigned interface and the inclusion of displays ads in search results and on the Start Page.

Bloglines is also preparing other monetization methods that will work within a feed reader, but it was not specific about what methods it might use. (Examples might include pay-per-click, affliliate links, or different kinds of display and rich media advertising.)

InterActive Corp.'s Ask.com, formerly AskJeeves, bought Bloglines in Feb. 2005. Soon after, it tried turning the 500-million-post database into a full-fledged portal, adding customized information like stock prices, weather reports and package tracking.

Other changes to Bloglines have included the debut of the start page, different types of reading views, drag-and-drop feed management, embedded video, and Flickr integration.

Until recently the parent company was relaxed about Bloglines' capacity to make a profit, but it has come upon hard times. Late last year, CEO Barry Diller announced plans to split InterActive Corp. five ways.
