BBC to Create Social-Networking Sites around Its Brands

The BBC is planning to expand its online presence by creating social networks that are integrated into its most popular brands, such as "Top Gear."

All of BBC's sites will add more interactive elements and look for ways to reach their target audience, Reuters reports. The launch dates for the social-networking sites and features have not been finalized, but BBC plans to continue evaluating its online brands - and launch within a year.

By exploring the addition of social-networking elements, the BBC is hoping to add the ability for visitors to interact not only with each other but also with its brands as well.

Besides increasing traffic, which gives the ancillary benefit of increased ad revenue, increased interaction can increase user loyalty. The BBC's website has approximately 14.5 million visitors a month.
