Aussie Broadband Subscribers Leap 16% in 6 Months

There were 6.43 million active internet subscribers in Australia at the end of the March 2007, consisting of 761,000 business and government subscribers and 5.67 million household subscribers, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, reports MarketingCharts.

Some of the just-released data highlights (referring to ISPs with more than 10,000 active subscribers during the relevant reference periods):

  • The number of non-dialup subscribers was 4.34 million, compared with dialup subscribers of 2.09 million, at the end of March 2007.
  • Non-dialup subscribers increased 16 percent between September 2006 and March 2007, driven mainly by household subscribers; dial-up numbers dropped 16 percent.
  • Non-dialup subscribers accounted for 67 percent of internet subscribers in Australia at the end of March 2007, compared with 60 percent at the end of September 2006.
  • Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) continued to be the dominant access technology used for non-dialup subscribers, with 3.36 million - or almost 78 percent - of total non-dialup subscribers.
  • Connections with download speeds of 1.5Mbps or greater increased 43 percent in March 2007 to 1.56 million, compared with 1.09 million subscribers at the end of September 2006.
