The Samsung Access
This May AT&T will debut mobile TV services powered by MediaFlo, a unit of Qualcomm.
The service will be available on LG's Vu phone and Samsung's Access. AT&T also plans to create two exclusive (currently unnamed) channels, according to Reuters.
The MediaFlo liaison will improve upon AT&T's existing mobile TV offering on the connection-fussy MobiTV. The service debuted last year, a nip behind Verizon's live mobile TV offering — powered by MediaFlo.
Verizon's mobile TV service costs an extra $15 a month. Despite a year's head-start with MediaFlo, subscribers are reportedly only in the tens of thousands.
Carriers have yet to cash in on mobile TV, but such relationships mean a great deal to MediaFlo, which by May will be available to 130 million customers across 55 markets.
Qualcomm hopes to expand MediaFlo to over 200 million potential customers in 2009.
