AT&T Frees Wi-Fi Access to Broadband Users

Single-handedly changing
the rules of engagement

AT&T is giving its broadband subscribers free access to some 10,000 wireless locations.

Its wi-fi network includes airports, McDonald's restaurants, Barnes & Noble bookstores, coffee shops, and sporting venues nationwide, according to InformationWeek.

Subscribers of AT&T Yahoo High Speed Internet or FastAccess DSL can access the network.

AT&T made the move in response to the popularity of wi-fi-enabled handsets like the iPhone. In any event, the tide increasingly turns in the direction of free wi-fi.

Though it lacks a home broadband business, competitor T-Mobile already touts 8,000 wi-fi Hotspots its subscribers can freely use. It launched a wi-fi calling service last summer, called T-Mobile@Home, to much fanfare.Mac Rumors says Apple may also make moves toward wi-fi sharing.

In addition to liberating 10,000 wi-fi access spots to subscribers, AT&T will expand its U-Verse offerings this year. Subscribers will have free access to associated networks.
