The total mobile advertising spend in the US will jump from $1.34 billion to $2.01 billion in 2012, according to a whitepaper from mobile media buying platform adsmobi. Smartphone sales will continue to enjoy strong growth with a total of 155.6 million sold smartphones next year. In addition, adsmobi predicts that Android will consolidate its current dominant position in 2012, with a 25% market share of the total US mobile market.
This is just the latest data point illustrating the growth the mobile usageāand the accompanying rise of mobile advertising.
Not surprisingly, the tools to analyze this activity are improving. Last month Google introduced enhanced Analytics reports with mobile ad performance metrics.
All AdWords reports in the new interface now have, or will have shortly, a new visual toggle as shown below for "All", "High-end Mobile" and "Tablet" ads. All AdWords metrics available in Google Analytics can be segmented by these new mobile and tablet dimensions.
"As more consumers begin to make use of tablets or high-end mobile devices, businesses need to understand this shift towards mobile and adapt your marketing mix," explained Phil Mui of the Google analytics team when announcing the change.
