'Total Music' Plan Spurs Government Inquisition

I would never order ABBA.

Total Music, a strategy for record labels to pre-load music on portable players, is being questioned by the US Justice Department, reports The Associated Press.

The Justice Department sent letters to a number of the major record labels seeking more information on what it is they have in mind. None of the labels have commented or confirmed receipt of the notices.

Total Music is an idea floated primarily by Universal Music Group. The premise is to provide select portable music buyers buyers with unlimited access to music. The cost of the music would be built in to the price of the player.

The Justice Department wants to ensure antitrust and anti-collusion guidelines are violated by the proposed program, which is still in the brainstorming phase.
