Of the 53 percent of US adults who visited a library in 2007, the majority fell between 18 and 30 years of age, according to a survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

It wasn't books that brought them there. 65 percent of visiting Gen Yers came for the free web access.

Two-thirds of library visitors that participated in the survey said they used computers at the library. And compared to non-internet users, web users are twice as likely to visit.

Overall, 62 percent of Gen Y respondents visited a library in '07. The figure shrank with age: 57 percent of adults aged 43 to 52 visited a library last year; 46 percent of adults aged 53 to 61; 42 percent of adults aged 62 to 71; and 32 percent of those aged 72 and up.
