Quote of the year
Major Brands:
- Doritos is accepting user-generated ad submissions on CrashtheSuperBowl.com, looking for a spot it can air during the upcoming Super Bowl.
- Lycos' European division will be using wunderloop to deliver targeted ads across Germany, the UK, France and other markets.
E-Commerce:
- Facebook is testing a system that lets application developers accept e-commerce payments directly through its site.
- Nonesuch Records is experimenting with giving people who buy a CD on their site a free digital copy immediately upon purchase.
- Saul Williams has released his Trent Reznor-produced album, The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust, online. Listeners can download it for free or "support the artist." Radiohead, which did the same thing for its In Rainbows album, found freeloaders still outnumbered loyal (paying) fans.
Biz Buzz:
- Google has added the ability to track flight status updates by partnering with FlightStats.com.
- MySpace has launched a new PrimeTime channel, streaming shows from Hulu.com and pointing online viewers to its own original series.
Signs of Doom:
- The Yale Book of Quotations has selected "Don't tase me, bro!" as its top phrase of 2007. The phrase was disseminated online — and consequently converted into pop culture — when University of Florida student Andrew Meyer shouted it out while repeatedly Tased by police.
- Gossip blogger Perez Hilton had his YouTube account suspended. The company said he violated terms of service when he published a video of Liza Minnelli intoxicated.
- TorrentSpy had its appeal of a copyright lawsuit brought by the MPAA denied, with a judge saying it clearly violated copyright laws.
