Two US senators have written letters to the Federal Trade Commission, urging it to thoroughly review Google's proposed acquisition of DoubleClick, reports Reuters.

Wisconsin Democrat Herb Kohl and Utah Republican Orrin Hatch penned the letters to the FTC, reiterating concerns over the squashing of competition and consumer privacy.

The two believe the significant lessening of competition represented by the deal, combined with the understanding that both companies collect information on online behavior, requires "serious scrutiny" by the regulatory agency.

The complaint is not original; indeed, similar ones have been made, even by major players, since Google first announced its desire to acquire DoubleClick.

The FTC acknowledged receiving the letters but declined to comment further.

Google says the issues are ones it has already discussed with the FTC. It remains confident the deal will be approved.

The potential acquisition is enduring lengthened scrutiny by the European Commission.
