Digg it
WSJ.com is now including Digg buttons sitewide, giving people free access to Digg-submitted news.Digg is among the major online players that disseminate users' interpretations of important news. Digg buttons began appearing last night.
The Journal currently enjoys one million online subscribers. But according to the Associated Press, owner Rupert Murdoch envisions tens of millions of readers around the world, which in turn will attract plenty of big-budget advertisers.
WSJ.com is among the last high-profile newspaper websites to retain its paid-access model. Others, including The New York Times and Financial Times, have either announced plans to drop subscriptions in favor of ad revenue, or fallen off the map altogether.
Whether or not the Journal goes free online has been the primary topic of discussion since Murdoch's News Corp. finalized its acquisition of the Dow in August.
