MySpace Packs Up, Moves to Silicon Valley

Mark vs. Tom

MySpace is moving north, from hometown Beverly Hills to California's tech Mecca — and the home base of myriad venture capitalists — Silicon Valley.

The mega social network plans on hiring hundreds of Valley software engineers in America's digital capital, in an effort to buckle down against competitors.

MySpace also plans on making it easier for software developers to create third-party apps for its platform, just like Facebook.

BusinessWeek's Sarah Lacy draws comparisons between the two networks and wonders whether a showdown is inevitable. She ultimately concludes there is room in the market for both:

"It's a bit like comparing eBay to Amazon. You might be able to buy nearly anything on either site, but the experience, price, business models and market valuations couldn't be more different."

This disparity may also ring about the sites' user base, at least according to one writer who compared MySpace and Facebook to working-class and suburban neighborhoods, respectively.
