Google Launches Taiwanese YouTube, YouTube Blocked in China

Taiwan and China

For sites like YouTube, going global has setbacks when it touches on regional politics like the Taiwan-China debacle.

YouTube launched a Taiwanese version of its site yesterday, according to AP News, featuring content from four Taiwan media partners that include China Television Co. and Taiwan Broadcasting System.

Shortly thereafter, mainland China-based bloggers Danwei and Marc van der Chijs observed that YouTube's "server stopped responding."

Instigators have been quick to suggest that YouTube was blocked by the mainland government. It remains unclear whether the move — if indeed a move was made — is a retaliatory response to YouTube's Taiwan-specific debut.
