Sugar, an online media network for women, announced its purchase of Coutorture Media on Tuesday.

Coutorture's empire is composed of about 230 style-oriented sites and blogs, reports ClickZ.

Sugar uses popular women's network iVillage to push its ad inventory.

Ad inventory across Sugar's network is sold by NBCU, which owns women's destination iVillage and recently purchased Oxygen, a woman's television network. a unit of NBC Universal.

Coutorture will remain independent of Sugar, which plans to integrate its ShopStyle offering across the network in order to better empower readers to utilize the shopping site's tools.

But this is only one component of a larger picture. The next several weeks will see the launch of Pet Sugar, Lil'Sugar (a parenting site), Savvy Sugar (a money-minded site), and Citizen Sugar (a political site).

Sugar serves an 18-45-year-old female audience. The terms of the acquisition were left undisclosed, but it was reportedly a mixture of equity and cash.
