Google Gets Snarky with Verizon Over FCC Lobbying

Snarl

Google has leveled accusations that the cell phone provider Verizon improperly lobbied the FCC regarding Google's bid for part of the available wireless spectrum, reports Bloomberg News.

Verizon stands accused of meeting with FCC Chairman Kevin Martin privately at the same time the wireless company was trying to get rules for auctioning the spectrum changed. Google has been trying to win available spectrum-width, which currently-drafted rules say would have to be open to all devices.

Verizon seeks to eliminate the open-access requirement from the new rules.

Verizon spokespeople say the charges by Google and others are without merit.

The two companies have leveled blows at one another multiple times over the course of the FCC/spectrum auction issue. They may also cross swords over Google's intention to build a broadband cable under the Pacific Ocean - an ambition Verizon shares.
