Disney Abandons MVNO Model; Bows Down to Carriers

Disney is calling it quits on its MVNO service Disney Mobile. In less than a year, this marks the second MVNO to shutter since ESPN Mobile.

But the service isn't vanishing for good. Disney plans on utilizing its mobile content by partnering with a major carrier. In like manner, the company converted ESPN Mobile into MVP, a free ESPN service offered by Verizon.

The Walt Disney Internet Group says the MVNO business model suffered under the hypercompetitive US mobile market, according to AdWeek. Other MVNO closings include Amp'd Mobile, while Earthlink's Helio axed 100 employees as part of a company-wide restructuring.

The Disney Mobile service allowed parents to monitor their kids through the Family Center Suite.
