No pancakes for YouTube
Prince has announced plans to "reclaim the internet." Reasons for the declaration include unauthentic memorabilia sold on eBay, grainy video performances rampant on YouTube, and entire albums downloaded for free on torrent Pirate Bay.
The demands were doled out in a press release, according to Ars Technica, and ring strange: Prince distributed his latest album, Planet Earth, for free online just months ago.
Though his call for regulation is eye-catching, the artist will have a hard time having demands met, given they go against the grain of the people themselves. eBay has always struggled with fake merchandise, and Pirate Bay is a pro at staying open despite repeated shut down attempts.
Meanwhile, YouTube operates under a loophole that omits it from legal attacks such as the one Prince wants to stage. And while it must abide to takedown requests, this battle would pit Prince against millions.
