eBay Opens Gumtree Classifieds to U.S. Cities

eBay is launching yet another free classifieds service, this time an import from across the pond, reports The Boston Globe.

Gumtree, already popular in the UK, is now hitting American shores. Boston, Chicago and New York City feature Gumtree locales that seek to connect specific ethnic groups in those cities with their home countries. In Boston and New York, feature British transplants while Chicago serves natives from Poland.

eBay hopes that bringing together ethnicities seeking to do business with one another other will prove a solid business move.

This is the second classifieds site launch by eBay in just a few months. Earlier it unveiled Kijiji.com. It also owns a stake in craigslist, the dominant free classifieds player, and the one against which most others are measured.
