Wireless broadband Internet company Clearwire has signed distribution deals with both DirecTV and EchoStar Communications, reports The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
The deals make Clearwire service available to customers of either satellite TV company. Clearwire, for its part, will be able to offer video services to its customer base. Those service offerings are expected to become available sometime later this year.
Clearwire currently covers about 258,000 customers. With the two deals, it now has exposure to a pool of a combined 29.4 million more.
Sprint Nextel could be looking to make a deal with Clearwire for quick access into the Wi-Max market. Clearwire's Wi-Max, a powerful wireless broadband technology that requires fewer towers than Wi-Fi, serves markets that Sprint Nextel does not. It's not clear yet what such a partnership would look like.
Previous reports speculated Clearwire would try offering its own satellite TV product.
