New Widgets Bring Street Art to Mobile

Shepard Fairey's
Guns and Roses

Start Mobile and XLR8 Mobile have joined forces to launch a mobile content widget, according to a recent press release. The widget places paid content on mobile phones anywhere in the world.

The widget is powered by XLR8's "WapItUp!" mobile commerce platform, which delivers mobile content from any site to cell phones worldwide through a proprietary commerce system.

Users purchase content from micro-site widget storefronts, which already include work from Tim Biskup, Shepard Fairey, David Choe, Lynne Naylor, The London Police, Winston Smith, Chris Reccardi, Mars One, Boogie, Tara McPherson, and Patrick Nagel

Jamie O'Shea, the former editor of JUXTAPOZ MAGAZINE, called the idea "incredibly progressive," as the presence of pop modern artists "[turns] mobile phones into portable art galleries on the cheap."

Content costs $1.99 to download. Available widgets purvey wallpaper, ringtones and video ringers.
