AT&T, Verizon Oppose Google's Open Airwave Auction (Of Course)

Google's push to open available airwaves to other bidders has met two AT&T and Verizon-shaped roadblocks, reports the Seattle Times.

The FCC plans to auction off newly available sections of the airwaves in January of 2008. Current government rules mandate the winner must be the one to use the airwaves they win but Google would like to change those rules. The company wants to allow winners to lease sections they're not using at wholesale rates to third parties.

Verizon and AT&T say that change would lessen the value of those airwaves and are urging the FCC to reject those proposed changes.

At least one company has said it would buy airwave space through Google's secondary auction if it went into practice.
