Online Media Employment Up 15%

Online Media wants YOU

For the first time since 2001, employment in online media topped 40,000, reports Ad Age, which analyzed data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Over the past year, 5,000 jobs were added, a 15 percent rise.

Though still a fraction of its bigger siblings, online media is gaining on traditional media. Newspapers cut 9,800 jobs, down 2.7 percent, while TV, radio and magazines saw a rise between 1 and 3 percent.

Online media is classified as having no traditional media component. It has yet to reach its "bubble-bursting peak" of 51,300, which last was hit in July 2000.

Online media excludes search-engine firms. Google employs 12,238 people worldwide, up from 6,790 a year earlier - an 80 percent increase.
