YouTube Serves as Venezuelan Anti-Censorship Tool

When Radio Caracas Television employees found their stations shut down by the government, they turned to YouTube to keep broadcasting, reports CNN, via WebProNews.

RCTV staffers continue to produce three hour-long installments a day and upload them to YouTube despite a government shut-down. The comments on the videos that have been posted have turned into debates on free speech and a variety of other issues. A reduced number of RCTV staffers continue to produce the shows, a task they consider their journalistic responsibility.

The Venezuelan station was shut down by President Hugo Chavez after accusations of violating broadcast laws. Chavez replaced the station with one that is government-run. RCTV had been openly critical of the Chavez government, which likely led to its silencing.

Chavez has threatened another station, Globalvision, with the same fate.
