Study: Canadians Worry About Telecom-Nabbing FDI

Maxime Bernier

The Canadian public doesn't want foreign investors buying stake in its domestic telecoms, according to a government-funded study (via Globe and Mail).

Resistance stemmed from Canadian companies that lost economic strength to parent companies in foreign countries. Sixty-eight percent surveyed by The Strategic Counsel felt Canada should worry about foreign takeovers.

The studies were a result of Industry Minister Maxime Bernier's desire to relax restrictions on allowing foreigners to invest in Canadian telecoms. Findings suggest that the minister reconsider.
