Study: 1 in 3 Americans Are Minorities

America, the melting pot

The Census Bureau estimates one in three Americans - roughly 100 million - are minorities. As a result, younger, demographers are discovering a racial generation gap emerging, reports The New York Times.

Though older Americans are typically white, the younger population is more Hispanic, black and Asian. Immigration and higher birthrates among newcomers are responsible for an increasingly diverse American youth. Nearly half of American kids today under 5 are Hispanic, black or Asian.

America is also becoming an older nation as 78 million baby boomers turn 60. The median age of Americans is 36.6 years, a record high. However, among Hispanics the median was 27.4 versus 40.5 for non-Hispanic whites.
