Lonelygirl15 Takes Europe with 'KateModern'

Lonelygirl15 generates a Web 2.0 stir.

Creators of Lonelygirl15 and the president of Bebo.com (the European MySpace, says Advertising Age) have formed an alliance to release KateModern, a social networking spin-off of the infamous Lonelygirl15. Billed for a July debut, the series will air multiple times a week on Bebo before syndicating older episodes to sites like LG15.com.

KateModern chronicles the goings-on of a teenage Londoner whose social life is threatened by "dark forces" behind the scenes. With an expected duration of 2-4 minutes each, episodes will feature interactive elements, such as feedback inclusion and puzzles. If fans solve the puzzles, they receive credit on the show; if not, the show's characters solve them. The collaborative environment sparked in Lonelygirl15 may also be leveraged to assist in developing plot twists on KateModern.

The show will make regular use of product placement instead of relying on standard ads, according to Adweek. Last month Lonelygirl15 made its first foray into product placement with the prominent inclusion of Icebreaker's Sours Gum in an episode.

Lonelygirl15 appeared on Youtube almost a year ago and has since become the most subscribed-to channel on the site, boasting over 91,000 subscribers and 10.2 million views. At present, representatives for Lonelygirl15 are undecided as to whether KateModern episodes will appear on YouTube.
