Google Launches Free 411 Phone Service

Google Labs, the company's idea incubator, has launched a free 411 service that could mean trouble for other directory assistance providers, reports Reuters.
Google 411 uses the same local business information as Google Maps, but without the need for an internet connection. The service detects where the call is coming from and then prompts users to speak what they're looking for.

Results can then be returned via voice or, if specified, text message. Users can also be connected to the business they've found free of charge.

Google does warn that because the service is still experimental there may service interruptions and other shortcomings.
