Gameloft, a leading maker of games for mobile phones, announced this week that it is bringing its line of mobile games to the BlackBerry in hopes of grabbing a chunk of the device's expanding market, writes the New York Times.
The market for Blackberries is changing the boxy devices used by business types to models with better graphics and multimedia features, such as those of the new Pearl, available for a mere $200. Ontario-based Research in Motion, which makes the Blackberry, has about 8 million business subscribers and hopes to win over more with the new games.
For Paris-based Gameloft, making versions of its games for BlackBerry devices carries little risk. All of its titles are sold via download from its website, so there is no packaging and no middleman. Most of Gameloft's titles cost about $7.
Apart from the racing game Asphalt: Urban GT 2, Gameloft's titles for the BlackBerry will include a poker game, a battle-simulation game, Midnight Pool and games based on TV shows Desperate Housewives and Lost. But a big seller with the traditional BlackBerry crowd is likely to be Pro Golf 2007, which features PGA champion Vijay Singh, according to Gameloft VP of Publishing Gonzague de Vallois.
