Apple May Be Eyeing PC Game Market

Civ 4, one of the few games
available for the Mac

Given the "cool factor" of the latest Mac campaign, in which PCs are portrayed by a stodgy business guy, one would think gamers choose Macs more often than the PC. But Windows-loaded PCs are preferred by serious gamers - even after Mac's switch to Intel processors more than a year ago, reports CNET.

Though the NPD Group estimates PC game software was worth a cool $970 million last year, a fact that's led Microsoft to build a rapport with many a game developer, Apple appears to focus on lifestyle software like its iLife suite. Even when Apple does get games, they have usually been long available for Windows.

Some believe that Apple is preparing for a renewed attack on the game industry via products like the iPod and its new Apple TV. Though don't expect an epic shooter or strategy game: Apple is likely setting its sights on casual gaming - which is becoming more popular among those intimidated by intricate games.

Some think Apple might have some surprises in store when it releases Leopard, the next version of the Mac OS, and Core Animation, a new graphics technology. There is also some hope because of Boot Camp, software that lets Intel-based Macs run Windows, allowing users to play the latest games the day they're releasedĀ for Windows. But that's likely only a near-term solution.
