Toyota debuted its new Scion model in two worlds on Thursday: the real one at the Chicago Auto Show, and the virtual one at Second Life.
Toyota launched the Scion xD simultaneously in both worlds, with matching press conferences, Reuters reports. Second Life residents can purchase a virtual Scion from kiosks at "Scion City" for 300 Linden dollars, the virtual world's currency (1.00 Linden dollar = $1.00).
Both online and off, Toyota is attempting to reach trend-setting, tech-savvy individuals. The Scion xD will offer many of the same popular customization options that other models had, and will make MP3 playback via CDs and iPod connectivity standard.
Toyota has ceased production of the xA and xB models. As a result, the automaker expects overall Scion sales to fall in 2007, but rise again in 2008 as xD sales cover the lag.
