WOMMA Review Unlikely to Hurt Edelman

A 90-day review that could result in expulsion from the Word of Mouth Marketing Association might be embarrassing to PR firm Edelman, but most marketing experts say it won't have a significant affect on Edelman's overall business.

Edelman, is under review by WOMMA for the creation of three fake blogs for client Wal-Mart, MediaPost reports. Edelman deleted one blog, the RV travel site Wal-Marting Across America, and revised previously anonymous comments on the other two blogs: a blog for Working Families for Wal-Mart; and Paid Critics, a site that pays Edelman employees to expose critics of Wal-Mart. Edelman employees had left anonymous comments on those blogs.

Even with those revisions, observers say, Edelman does not adhere to WOMMA's recently created ethical guidelines regarding transparency and honest conversation with consumers. Nevertheless, even banishment from WOMMA would not likely affect Edelman's current or potential client roster.

"In the long run, does any client really care if its agency is a member of WOMMA? Of course not. Some people will see this as [Edelman's] taking the arrows for its client," Dave Taylor, founder of Intuitive Systems consultancy, is quoted as saying.
