MTV Networks is planning to launch a series of multiplatform networks that will allow it to debut new offerings aimed at a more adult audience.
The new platforms, which will include broadband, VOD, and wireless, will be developed without a linear TV presence, AdWeek reports. The new networks are designed to appeal to an older demographic, thus creating new revenue streams and opportunities.
"We think there was a better opportunity to reach people through these multiplatform networks at a very modest cost on both the programming side and overhead," Viacom president and CEO Philippe Dauman is quoted as saying. "So if some of them work, they could have very, very high returns for us."
MTV Networks will announce more information about the new platforms in the coming weeks. The move toward digital was likely prompted in part by Viacom's digital ad sales increase of 73 percent year over year. Dauman said he anticipates digital sales to continue to expand at high double-digit rates.
