Wal-Mart Shuts Down MySpace Clone

After just 10 weeks, Wal-Mart has pulled the plug on "The Hub," a social-networking site for teens that the nation's largest retailer had hoped would become a competitor for MySpace.

When users try to access the The Hub, they are greeted with the message "Sorry, but the School Your Way promotion has ended," Forbes reports. Though unclear whether Wal-Mart originally planned on shutting down the site now, that the site remained underutilized and required adult verification points to the more likely conclusion that it was an experiment gone awry.

Instead of trying to copy MySpace, Forbes adds, a better move for Wal-Mart might have been to use the existing traffic that its own site is getting from MySpace (currently 3 percent of visitors to Wal-Mart.com) in the form of promotions and contests on MySpace.
