MTVN Gets Universal Mobile Video Content Rights

Universal Music Group and MTV Networks have struck a deal allowing MTVN to create and distribute mobile video content, to be available via streaming and on-demand download on the company's branded wireless services.

The deal allows MTVN to create and distribute content for the label's entire roster of artists, among them U2 and Elton John, writes MediaWeek (via MediaBuyerPlanner). MTVN's branded wireless services include MTV Mobile, VH1 Mobile, CMT Mobile and Logo.

The pricing model for the new content is not yet clear, but subscribers will likely be able to buy content a la carte or pay a monthly surcharge.

Though some 44 percent of the 200 million-plus mobile phones in use are capable of playing short-form video, only one percent are expected to pay for a subscription to a video downloading or streaming package this year, according to a recent report from JupiterResearch.
