AOL and Verizon have partnered to launch PlayLinc, a free new online games service that allows users to host games on their PCs and invite friends to private gaming sessions over the internet, reports Gamasutra.
Verizon has also launched a game site (games.verizon.com) that will showcase PlayLinc as well as offer forums, blogs, gaming news and related content. PlayLinc and the community site will likely provide business opportunities for Verizon, including digital distribution of games, in-game and on-site advertising, and promotion of other Verizon services, including Verizon's FiOS and DSL broadband.
Other partners in the undertaking, including Intel, America's Army, the Cyberathlete leagues and new AOL acquisition GameDaily are expected to launch private-label PlayLinc services.
