AT&T to Provide Municipal Wi-Fi

AT&T on Tuesday said it had been selected by Springfield, Illinois, to offer wireless internet access to residents and businesses.

The task of providing Wi-Fi internet access to the state capital is the first of more than a score of similar efforts in U.S. cities that AT&T hopes to undertake, writes Reuters. The Wi-Fi network for Springfield would offer a free ad-supported service, with speeds of 250-260 Kbps, and a paid service with speeds up to 1 Mbps.

Springfield's city council has yet to officially approve AT&T's selection. The planned network, which would also be used to support the operations of the city government, would cover 25-30 square miles, using both Wi-Fi and fixed wireless services.
