Social Networking Sites Luring Brand Marketers

Yet another social networking site - the fashion-oriented StyleDiary.net - has succeeded in wooing brand advertisers, and it has stopped relying on Google AdSense, turning instead to CPM-based advertising, writes MediaPost. Advertisers include ShopChiffon.com and Misamu.com. Photo-sharing site Flickr also recently struck a branding ad deal - its first.

Flickr is placing Nikon branding on its site, including logos next to photos taken with Nikon cameras, branding on the site before users sign in and Nikon-only photo galleries, according to MediaPost. The site is otherwise monetized by Yahoo search ads.

"I'm sure they're all going to go to CPMs," Edelman's Steve Rubel is quoted as saying regarding social-networking sites' courting of brand marketeres. But, he said, the sites "need to do it in a way that the community's going to accept." adding that publishers are in the best position to judge what their users will tolerate.
