House Removes Threat to Cookies in Spyware Bill

As expected, the House of Representatives made an exception for cookies in its Spy Act proposed legislation, according to AdWeek. The subcommittee shepherding H.R. 29, known alternatively as the "Bono Bill" and the "Spy Act," passed an amendment giving the same protections to cross-site third party cookies as the bill had set aside for first party cookies. If the bill passes into law in this form, it will not cause sites to have to ask permission each time a cookie is placed on a user's computer. The previous version had made sites, and particularly ad networks and behavioral targeting firms, nervous. Last year a version without the amendment passed by the House but never made it into law largely due to concerns in the Senate.
